Dubai

India's infrastructure is crap, and so I have been avoiding the internet cafes and haven't posted in a while.  There's a lot to catch up on.  I am taking things out of order to mention our first stop on the trip, Dubai.  We were only in Dubai for 2 nights and I wish we had stayed longer.  The old section of town was beautiful.  (I am a sucker for Arabic art and architecture.)  I could walk around the gold and spice souks for hours and never be bored.  Perhaps I would feel hassled, but not bored.  The new areas are also fascinating in their own way.  The city feels as thought it was built over night -- all bright and shiny, brand new buildings on a grand scale.  Like Vegas, without the gambling.  Dubai is bustling now and I can only imagine what it was like before the financial meltdown.  We read that the population of the UAE is only 10% Emirates.  90% are foreigners (and of those 60% are Indian).  It holds a cross-section of many cultures.  And, of course, American culture is primarily represented by stores like Cinnabon and Starbucks.  Many thanks to our friend Heather for showing us a great time.  We would have liked to take a trip out to the desert, and so we hope to perhaps go back one day.
