India is difficult to travel in. The country is big. The trains get fully booked up to a week. And so, Charlie and I found ourselves on a night bus from Aurangabad to Panjim, Goa. For 16+ hours. We are covering long distances, but it takes far longer than it should to drive here because there are only two lanes which are shared by cars, buses, trucks, tractors, scooters, wagons, water buffalo, wandering cows, herds of goats, and ladies carrying big baskets and water jugs on their heads. I think it took us 6 hours to cover the first 200 kilometers. The bus seats were placed far too close together. Even worse than a plane. I am 5'8" and my knees could not NOT hit the seats in front of me. And the seats recline further than they do on an airplane, which means that we had the head of the person in front of us basically in our lap. No seat on earth is comfortable for 16 hours, but these were exceptionally bad. And then there are the other passengers, which include crying babies and the obligatory loud talkers on cell phones. At hour 8, with another 8 to go, I thought "This cannot get any worse." And of course it did. I saw the silhouette of a cockroach walking on the seat in front of me. Lovely. Just lovely.
