Perth, Australia is a near-perfect city. Great weather. Fantastic scenery including a large hilltop park overlooking a river harbour (which reminds me of a cross between Seattle and San Diego). Lovely, cool, art-y neighborhoods and historic buildings. Fantastic transportation system, including free buses in the city center. Great walking and bike paths set well away from the roads. They even have bike lanes on the largest highways. And it is just a short train ride away from the coast.
It is too bad the ocean is so rough cold, especially as its the end of summer here. And food is outrageously expensive - we were hard pressed to find a pizza or a hamburger at any average restaurant or pub for less than $18 (Aus), which also seems to be the going price of a sixpack of bottled beer. Bottles of Australian wine, like Penfolds, are more expensive here in Perth than they are in Los Angeles, which I have been told is attributable to high taxes on alcohol, but it still makes no sense to me.
But, all in all, we liked Perth. Maybe we even loved it. And the sunsets were especially lovely.
