The Pursuit of Fairness

On the train from Hospet to Hubli, weeks ago now, I sat next to an exceptionally beautiful young Indian woman. She knew a little English and so we chatted for at least an hour or so. As she signalled that the next station was her stop, and we said our goodbyes, I took the opportunity to tell her, "You are very beautiful." Her reply was, "No. I think this is more beautiful," as she pointed at my pale skin.

Above are a few pictures of creams promising skin whitening "in as little as one week" I have come across on this trip. If only "fairness" did come in a topical cream - but only to change minds and hearts, not skin color.
