Mamallapuram. Mamallapuram. I just like saying the name. It is a sleepy little beach town two hours South from Chennai.
It has a shitty beach. When I say shitty, I mean covered in shit. You can't walk without stepping in it. The beach otherwise would be lovely, even though the water is scary rough.

But Mamallapuram has a lot of other things going for it. It has UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the second largest monolithic carving in the world - a scene from the Mahabbarata.
It also hosts an Indian dance festival, which happened to be going on while we were there, and takes place directly in front of one of the World Heritage site. Yep, if you ever happen to be in this area of the world in late-December through mid-January, it is definitely a nice place to check out - without swimming in the ocean.
